Rent or buy in Bangladesh? An honest cost comparison
We compare five years of renting in Dhaka against owning the same apartment — including hidden costs on both sides.
Everyone has an opinion on renting versus buying. Numbers are calmer than opinions, so let us look at them.
The renting side Rent in prime Dhaka areas rises roughly 5-8% a year. Over five years, a BDT 45,000 monthly rent costs well over BDT 30 lakh with no asset at the end — but you stay flexible and free from maintenance bills.
The buying side Ownership brings registration cost, service charge, maintenance and, for most buyers, loan interest. In exchange you build equity, and well-located Dhaka apartments have historically appreciated steadily.
The deciding question If you expect to stay in the same city for more than five years and have a stable income, buying usually wins. If your work or family situation might move you, renting is the smarter financial choice.
